Sales Engineer

Working at Thinking Machines

Thinking Machines is a data science startup. Our vision is for the Philippines to become a global hub for data science. To do that, we create data science cultures, one organization at a time.

We’re a company made up of intellectually curious, civic-minded, forever-learning individuals. We believe that great data science products are built with care for people, and that the best way to drive inclusive innovation is to start with a diverse team.

Our field of work is incredibly dynamic, so we want to work with people who are committed to growing with us. We want to hire people who can demonstrate an ability to learn, then provide them with personalized coaching, growth opportunities, and a great working environment to get them to world-class.

Role Description

As a Sales Engineer, you will be working with our team to scope out some of our biggest enterprise data platform projects. As a Sales Engineer, you will work hand-in-hand with the sales and data science teams. You will help prospective customers understand the power of Cloud Data Platforms, translate business problems into sophisticated technical solutions, explain the technical aspects of the solution, run pilots, and resolve any potential technical roadblocks. Our enterprise clients deal with massive amounts of critical data that run with virtually zero downtime. As such, they have their own IT and technical teams that ensure everything works smoothly and securely at every level. Given our commitment to customer happiness, we have to make sure our technical decisions always meet their operational demands.

Day-to-day Tasks of a Sales Engineer

You will join our team in designing, hashing out, and implementing our infrastructure proposals with fellow engineers and tech managers from our clients. You need to be specifically attuned to the priorities and considerations of large corporations, making sure what we build for them is technically sound and can be fully integrated into their systems.

Lead technical aspects of the sales cycle: You will take full responsibility for the technical aspects of the sales cycle, bringing technical expertise to introductory meetings, supporting bid responses, proof-of-concept work, and the coordination of additional supporting technical resources. You will use your technical expertise to help determine what technical approach is right for the client, and you will identify and handle key customer technical objections to guide them to success.

Demo and pilots: Show always works better than tell. You will be demoing public Cloud Data Platforms like Google Cloud Platform or AWS to CIOs and IT organizations. You will develop and demo light-weight pilots and POCs of data systems — think ETL pipelines and data warehouses.

Design architecture: You will develop comprehensive solutions architectures, making recommendations on integration strategies, tools, and application infrastructure required to successfully implement the complete solution. Knowing the intricacies of the different platforms and tools, you will be providing “best practice” advice to customers to optimize success. Client engineering teams will respect your suggestions more if you know the nuances of what you’re talking about!

Solutioning with prospective clients: You need to have enough critical thinking and technical proficiency to help our team analyze trade-offs between different technical solutions, and effectively recommend the best way forward given the client’s unique needs and constraints.

Technical account management: You will manage the technical relationship with some of our biggest customers, including overseeing solution briefings, proof-of-concept work, and the coordination of additional technical resources.

Since the startup space can get crazy, we are looking for someone who is up for any challenge and has the initiative to seek out ways to be useful. We move fast, and we expect you to keep up!
